Sedation Dentistry – Frequently Asked Questions

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes. When administered by a trained professional like Dr. Jay, sedation dentistry is extremely safe. Your vital signs are closely monitored throughout the procedure, and sedation options are tailored to your age, health, and medical history.

Will I be unconscious during sedation?

No. Most sedation options (nitrous oxide or oral sedation) keep you relaxed but conscious. You’ll be awake, able to respond, but feel calm and may not remember much of the procedure. Only IV sedation creates a “twilight sleep” where you may drift in and out of awareness.

How long does the sedation effect last?

Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes after your procedure. Oral sedation and IV sedation may linger for several hours, so you’ll need someone to drive you home and rest for the day.

Is sedation dentistry only for major procedures?

Not at all. Sedation is also ideal for routine cleanings or minor procedures if you experience anxiety, have a strong gag reflex, or difficulty sitting still for long.

Can children receive sedation dentistry?

Yes. Dr. Jay is experienced in safely using sedation options for children who are anxious or have special needs. We’ll review your child’s health history and recommend the safest, most effective approach.
